Wave kiting is the supreme discipline in kitesurfing. However having said this, wave kiting is not only fun in 5m waves. Riding strapless on a wave board is fun, exciting and liberating on it's own. Even riding a directional surf board in the flat water is a total new experience to what you know from your twin tip. It is in fact easiest to learn in the flat water, learn the water start strapless, learn riding heel and toe side and eventually going into the transitions.
As you skills grow you will eventually want to go into the waves. The beauty of wave kiting is that you can pull yourself into the wave with the kite and once you feel the mighty push of the wave you can park the kite and surf the waves as the surfers do. Thus wave kiting is an amazing combination between conventional surfing and kiting.

Kappalady is an ideal spot to learn wave kiting because you have it all here. The flat water lagoons where you can familiarize yourself with the strapless surf board, where you can practice your first waterstarts and basic riding. Once you become more confident, you can expose yourself to your first 4-6 ft waves on the Kappalady reef. The waves are nice and steep, have enough power to push you nicely, however they are not violent as the reef is 3-5m below the ocean surface. Thus Kappalady is the best spot to learn wave kiting in Sri Lanka not to say all South East Asia.
